We do not pray alone. For years, I had lit a candle stub to unite my prayer with that of my community, but it was only after Iris pointed out how the stubby candle had listened to many holy thoughts, that I realized how true that was. Now, the lighted candle began to symbolize not only the unity of my prayer with the present prayer of the sisters of my community, but with their prayers in the past — that is, with the "holy thoughts" it heard when they had the candle.
