"I don't believe I have ever gone to a doctor's office or a dentist's without a notebook," says Patricia Hampl, "the one companion I seem to require in all public and therefore potentially alien places — museums, cafes, auto body shops, wherever waiting is done." Supermarkets are good. Malls are even better. Airports, for many, are the best, "in that limbo state in between departing and arriving," says Samantha Harvey.
