It was Mary — Madonna, Queen of Heaven, Mediatrix, Second Eve, Virgin-Mother — and the saints — those impassioned pray-ers who thirsted for a life larger than life — who drew me in then. Perhaps I can describe it the way my mother describes the visual condition from which she suffers: macular degeneration. The eye is unable to see with its center, its macular. Peripheral sight, which becomes enhanced, is all that remains of vision. For me, it is as though for over twenty-five years I've been operating primarily on peripheral eyesight. The Sacred Heart, it seems, is my way of reclaiming central vision — of seeing Jesus — at least as it encompasses the Christian faith.
