So also, those evil things in us that Jesus identifies as coming "out of the heart" are fundamentally misshapen good things (see Matt. 15:19). The Aramaic word for evil actually carries the connotation of "unripe" or "immature," a fact that reinforces the truth of Jesus' statement for me. This interpretation of evil does not lessen evil's destructive potential: immature reactions can cause enormous damage and destruction. The remedy for evil, however, is not retaliatory damning but wise restraint and persistent, redemptive love.
