Today, Africa, more than any other part of the planet, represents the woundedness of creation and the unnecessary suffering inflicted upon so many species. Because of poverty, malnutrition, and disease, millions die prematurely every year. Millions also perish because of tribal struggles and open warfare. Meanwhile, the struggle for survival, for basic meaning, for some reason to keep on living, extracts a higher price for African people than for probably anybody else on earth. In a word, Africa represents the open wound of a world torn to pieces by injustice and oppression.
