How often I've read the lives of saints and mystics and wanted to ask: "But exactly what did you do in your prayer?" Teresa tells us. Her answer is similar to Saint Francis, who said: "I look at Him, and He looks at me." This is what Christian mystics mean when they use technical terms such as "prayer of simple regard." These categories can be confusing and misleading. But graphic descriptions from Francis and Teresa ground us in life experience. Prayer is looking at Him who is looking at us.
