I do not mean to say that mass-produced objects and other ready-mades lack soul. Each thing generated from an assembly line has its unique being. Even monstrosities can become treasured relics, like the Edsels and finned Chevrolets from the late 1950s. Perhaps the plastic potted plants of the 1990s will be enshrined in the future. Construction by hand is not a prerequisite for the presence of soul in a thing. I have seen many paintings and handmade objects that convey less aesthetic appeal than aesthetics of industrial culture.
