“In the wild, turkeys can live up to ten years; on factory farms, turkeys rarely live beyond five months. Once factory-farmed turkeys ‘reach market weight,’ their food source is taken away in order to ensure a clean slaughter. The birds are loaded onto a truck and brought to a slaughterhouse, which might be up to eighteen hours away from their crowded confines. Due to the nature of this journey, including the lack of water and food, hundreds of thousands of turkeys die annually before the truck even arrives at the slaughterhouse. Once the trucks arrive, the turkeys are removed and then hung upside down in metal shackles on a conveyor belt. In the process, their heads are dipped into electrified water, which is meant to stun them before their throats are slit. Throughout this whole process we can sense the operation of the technocratic paradigm, as well as the logic and impact of market capitalism. Here, sentient subjects are reduced to commodities whose bodies are processed as if they were car parts on an assembly line.”
