For this academic and didactic volume, the authors, who all teach at Saint Meinrad School of Theology, examine nine films about Jesus. Each drama is assessed through three "lenses": How does the film compare to the historical record? How does the director create and communicate the content of the film? What do you learn about Jesus and the time in which the film was produced?

The films are The King of Kings (1927) directed by Cecil B. DeMille, King of Kings (1961) directed by Nicholas Ray, The Gospel According to Saint Matthew (1964) directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) directed by George Stevens, Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) directed by Norman Jewison, Jesus of Nazareth (1977) directed by Franco Zeffirelli, Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979) directed by Terry Jones, The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) directed by Martin Scorsese, and Jesus of Montreal (1989) directed by Denys Arcand. v
