We have come to the point where third party candidates for President of the United States are not allowed to participate in debates. The conservatives and the liberals like to talk about their differences and there is some value in doing that. But the sad fact is that there is very little that separates the two parties at this point in history. It seems as if the shadowy power and influence of special interest groups control both Republicans and Democrats. That does not bode well for the future of American democracy.
Alan Colmes, political commentator and Fox News radio host, is still a believer in liberals and their ideals and traditions. He sees this country as launched by progressive thinkers who put forth a liberal mission statement in the Declaration of Independence and a progressive framework in the Constitution on conducting the business of the nation.
Colmes points out that liberals have the right ideas when it comes to the poor, immigrants, gays, drug users, and the environment. He has high hopes for the future based upon the proposition that people get more liberal as they age. With ample reserves of wit, Colmes suggests that readers take some time to thank liberals for Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, civil rights, equal pay for equal work, and more.
In sidebar sections titled "A Little Help to Fight the Right," the author attacks the excessive and wrong-headed policies of conservatives on abortion, war, the military budget, the power of corporations, the welfare of the rich, and the validity of trickle-down economics.
