Heather Lende is an obituary writer in Haines, a small Alaskan town. She has survived being run over by a truck and raised five children. When asked to write an essay describing one piece of wisdom to live, she chooses "Find the Good." Not a bad choice given the relentless deluge of bad news in the media. In fact, it reminds us of the spiritual practice of "taking in the good" suggested by the bestselling author Rick Hanson in Just One Thing.

One of the challenges Heather faces is transcending negativity and emphasizing the positive. She marvels at the many ways in which grieving people try to avoid facing what’s happened to their loved ones. Heather is touched by the tenderness given elderly women by their caregivers.

We were impressed with the quest for goodness animated by the author's moral character and the ways in which she helps out those she encounters.
