How do an artist's paintings speak to our perceptions of self, beauty, vision, and meaning? This question has fascinated Roger Housden for years, and was the catalyst for his book How Rembrandt Reveals Your Beautiful Imperfect Self. Many of you know Roger from five popular Spirituality & Practice e-courses on poetry. His interest in art, like his interest in poetry, ranges across cultures and eras with a magnificent combination of curiosity and comprehension.
When we were taking another look at his Rembrandt book, we were reminded that it focused on the master artist's abiding reverence for the mysteries of the mind, body, and spirit — so we wondered whether he might be willing to offer a 12-session course on self-revelation through the works of 12 different artists. We were delighted that he said yes.
In this course, he explores revelations in the works of these master painters:
- Emma Amos
- Pierre Bonnard
- Marc Chagall
- Jean Baptiste Simeon Chardin
- A Fayoum portrait (late Byzantine/Egyptian)
- Artemisia Gentileschi
- Katsushika Hokusai
- Agnes Martin
- Henri Matisse
- Mark Rothko
- Bada Shanran
- Antonia Showering
His varied and poignant explorations of artists' works are portals through which we may enter and see afresh our own joy and sadness, success and defeat, faith and foolhardiness. Each of 12 sessions, sent to you on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for four weeks, will include:
- Housden's teachings about the artist and a chosen work;
- An invitation for you to reflect on your relationship with this art;
- A set of practices to encourage you to go deeper into the art and its meaning;
- An invitation to be part of a Practice Circle (forum open 24/7 to this course's worldwide community) guided by Housden.
Roger Housden is the author of 22 books, including the bestselling Ten Poems series. His writing has been featured in many publications, including The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and O: The Oprah Magazine. A native of England, he lives in Marin County, California, and teaches around the world. He's profiled as one of our Living Spiritual Teachers, and because of the enthusiastic reception for his many previous Spirituality & Practice e-courses, he is back by popular demand.
