Fairy tales are usually entertaining stories that yield deep wisdom about the human experience. After S&P hosted Thomas Moore's very popular 2019 e-course "Fairy Tales," we are happy to welcome him back for a second e-course on these stories for young and old alike. In this one-month program, he focuses on two advantages in reading fairy tales: to explore hidden powers that we can adopt and to find unexpected insights that can help us deal with life’s challenges.

Fairy tales are not all sweetness and love, as most have some dark characters and scary situations. The key is to have a wide-open imagination and a skill for seeing metaphor. This e-course doesn’t “psychologize” fairy tales, as some writers do, but instead looks for the codes and patterns that shed light, in a way that old fairy tales can, on being human. Reading them, reflecting upon them, and discussing them, we discover fresh angles on the human adventure, plus many examples of clever and magical powers useful when we are facing overwhelming obstacles.

"Fairy Tales: The Hidden Magic of Life" consists of 12 lessons, which will be sent on the frequency schedule you choose. Each contains:

  • a summary of the tale
  • a commentary by Thomas Moore
  • practice suggestions and ways to bring the tale's meaning into your own life

Some of the tales to be covered are by the Brothers Grimm, some from Hans Christian Anderson, and one from Japan, and one from Africa. They are:

  • Goldilocks and the Three Bears
  • The Frog Prince
  • The Demoness (Africa)
  • The Gingerbread Man
  • Puss in Boots
  • The Valiant Tailor
  • The Three Pigs
  • The Mirror (Japan)
  • Hansel and Gretel
  • The Firebird
  • The Emperor's New Clothes

You will also have access to the recording of the Q&A Zoom Session with Thomas Moore that was held in 2022, when this e-course was first offered live.

Thomas Moore is the author of the number one New York Times bestseller Care of the Soul and many other books about bringing soul to personal life and culture, humanizing medicine, finding meaningful work, doing religion in a fresh way, and crafting caring conversations. He is profiled in our Living Spiritual Teachers project, and his previous seven e-courses at S&P have been among our most popular.

Moore believes that fairy tales take us deep into the mysteries of life. Join us and see what magic they reveal to you.
