A theologian, social psychologist, and communication theorist, she takes seriously her teaching ministry.

Joan Chittister's muscular Christianity is grounded in the spiritual practices of the Rule of Saint Benedict, such as listening, hospitality, humility, and peace. Her vibrant understanding of sainthood enables us to see "icons of the human face of God" in fearless women and men who incarnate the imperatives of justice and compassionate service.

Chittister is well read, ecumenical, and visionary. That explains why her devotional writing is so inspiring and soul stretching. Whether pondering the beauty of the Psalms, the wisdom of Ecclesiastes, or the meaning of the Apostles Creed, Chittister's Christianity is alive with spiritual radiances that make the ordinary gleam with light and meaning.
