The church in the West concentrated on words — philosophy, theology, catechetics, creed and doctrine. While the church in the East appreciated these verbal forms of description, explanation, and teaching, it also sought to express in image — in the icon — the mysteries of Christ's incarnation, life, death, resurrection, and enthronement in glory at the right hand of the Father. Hearing was crucial, but just as crucial was seeing the Word of God.
