I had taken to heart a suggestion of one of the great religious writers of the twentieth century, Paul Tillich, who wrote at mid-century that we in the West should bury the word "God" for fifty years — and use those years to recover the full meaning of the word. To me this meant reuniting the female aspects of the Divine with the male aspects, bringing the immanent, motherly presence of God into full relationship with fatherly transcendence; recovering our lost women mystics; and restoring to Western civilization the experience of mystical love that three centuries of scientific materialism had suppressed.
