Jesus did not believe in a code of laws. He knew the road to the reign of God was not paved with laws, since laws are often only a subtle form of violence. Sadly laws often actually help create a climate of strife and evil that perpetuates resistance to the law of love. Even when they seem necessary, laws are temporary band-aids until the ancient wound heals. Gandhi taught, "It is pure deception to believe that an evil can be eradicated by the passing of a law. What is needed is a conversion of the heart."
