“Ever since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated and sometimes frightened by stories of the Bible. It’s been the literature of my life. It has been a captor and it’s been a spark for my imagination.

“Any ancient text can be a terror or a talisman, the key is in how you read it. As I’ve got older, I’ve turned more to poets than theologians to help me find inroads into religious literature. The more I think of the Bible as art, rather than obligation; the wilder it’s become, the more curious I’ve felt in the face of strange texts, the more seriously I can take them.”
