Robert Corin Morris, an Episcopal priest, is founder and executive director of Interweave, an ecumenical community learning center, and the author of three books. His extensive studies in Jungian psychology and Judaism, particularly the mystical tradition, have influenced his understanding of the Gospels. At the outset of Provocative Grace, Morris states that he has spent 30 years trying to see the Gospel texts with fresh eyes or as the Buddhists say with "a beginner's mind." That questing spirit definitely comes through on these pages. He concludes that Jesus has been his "lifelong provocateur, prompting me to explore how his sayings actually work out in real life."

Here are some of the difficult challenges Jesus laid down:

• "I have not come to make you comfortable."
• "Respect rules, but go beyond the rule-maker's way."
• "Follow me. Learn from me. Link yourself to the spirit of my words and deeds."

Throughout the rest of the book, Morris throws out more tough, paradoxical, relational, and ethical challenges. Jesus makes forgiveness one of the linchpins of his ministry, and there is no way that this spiritual practice can be watered down. Those who follow Jesus' way are also challenged to put God's priorities first, to adhere to God's family values, to practice simple justice, to welcome the stranger, to trust that the news is ultimately good, to be partners in the Divine work, and to not lose heart.
