Judy Chicago's multi-media work The Dinner Party is designed to, in the artist's words, "forge a new kind of art expressing women's experience." It consists of a triangular dinner table on which are arranged 30 painted china plates dedicated to major historical and mythic women including Amazon, Kalki, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, and others, each set on a richly embroidered runner faithful to the woman's era. This extraordinary work also includes a floor of 2300 porcelain tiles with the names of 999 women of achievement from primeval times to 1979. The Dinner Party affirms the spiritual practice of honoring teachers — past, present, and future.
