Claude is a small plump dog who likes to make a fashion statement with his beret and red sweater. When his companions leave to go to work, he decides it is a perfect day for a trip to the city. His buddy Sir Bobblysock accompanies him, and they both marvel at the fast pace of this urban milieu. As a newcomer to the city, Claude is very much taken with the large number of pigeons he sees everywhere.

After partaking of some exotic drinks, the two go shopping. In an incident at an art gallery, the determined little dog becomes a hero and is given a medal by the Mayor. Claude returns home in triumph but goes to bed before his human companions return from work. The next morning Sir Bobblysock is sick, so Claude skates to the hospital carrying him. He comes to the rescue once again — this time diagnosing a mysterious disease sweeping through the hospital and finding a cure for it.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes: this one is small and immensely creative in the ways he works wonders by helping others. This delightful book by Alex T. Smith is for children ages 6 to 9.
