A man's body thrown over that of his infant grandson in a futile attempt to prevent the baby from breathing toxic gas. The reality of violence presses upon us in other ways. We are acutely aware of the violence being done not only to other human beings but also to the natural world. Climate change, the extinction of species, terrorism, war — the challenges that presently face the human community can seem overwhelming. . . . Where can we go?

We go to the cross. The cross of Christ is the place where the suffering and evil of the world are met by God's infinite compassion and mercy.
